Research Notes on Flagyl Dosage
As with all medications, your physician will consider many things prior to prescribing Flagyl, including your overall medical history, age, weight, and what it is being used to treat. When prescribed for the treatment of amebic dysentery, the typical dosage of Flagyl is 750 mg, taken three times daily. For amebic liver abscess, the dose is usually between 250 to 500 mg, administered three times as day. Treatment for either of the above lasts between five to 10 days. When used for trichomoniasis, Flagyl will be administered as either a one day dosage of 2 grams, taken at once or split into two doses, or a seven day therapy of 250 mg taken three times daily. If Flagyl is prescribed for anaerobic infections, it is initially administered intravenously in a medical facility. The oral dosage for this condition is based on weight, at a rate of 3.4 mg per pound. Flagyl ER is the only form approved for the treatment of bacterial vaginosis, with the recommended dosage being 750 mg once, administered once daily for a seven day period.1
