Research Notes on Fish Pedicure for Psoriasis
A fish pedicure is a unique alternative to the typical spa procedure, which uses razors or pumice stones to scrape off dead skin cells. It has been used in the treatment of psoriasis. Originating in the small Turkish towns of Kangal and Sivas, it involves the use of "doctor fish."1 These small fish eat away at the dead skin cells. Since they have no teeth, do not bite off live skin. This type of treatment is not readily available in the United States.2
Fast Facts:
- In 2008, the first well known doctor fish pedicure service was opened in the United States by John Ho in Alexandria, Virginia.3
- Two varieties of doctor fish are used: Garra rufa and Cyprinion macrostomus.3
- This procedure has been used for relief of several skin disorders, including eczema, psoriasis, and dermatitis.3
