Research Notes on Fish Oil and Depression
Studies have suggested that taking a fish oil supplement on a daily basis may aid in treating depression.1 Research has suggested that taking antidepressants combined with a daily fish oil supplement might help alleviate the symptoms of depression, according to psychiatrists. However researches do not suggest that fish oil be used as a single source for treating major depression or bipolar disorder.2
Fast Facts:
- Fish oil might aid in reducing symptoms such as anxiety, sleep disorders, thoughts of suicide, reduced libido, and sadness.3
- People who are depressed have low levels of EPA, which is a fatty acid that can be found in fish oil and is important for normal brain function.3
- Foods such as salmon, halibut, mackerel, and walnuts are good sources for omega-3 fatty acids.1
