Research Notes on Fish Oil Doesn't Help Heart Attack Patients
Researchers have recently concluded that patients who have previously suffered a heart attack and are being treated with medications receive no benefit from the addition of fish oil caplets. The study has revealed that the inclusion of the highly purified encapsulated form of omega-3 fatty acid has no effect on the potential for future stroke, a second heart attack, or sudden cardiac death. Researchers are yet to determine if the fish oil caplets may help to prevent heart disease, though, and the possibility has not been ruled out.1
Fast Facts:
- Currently, the American Heart Association recommends patients with a history of heart disease eat one gram of omega-3 fatty acids daily, allowing the fish oil capsules as a substitute.2
- Researchers note that while fish oil does not appear beneficial to those who are receiving optimal medical therapy, if a patient is not, for whatever reason, receiving or taking medication and following physician's guidelines, the fish oil may hold some benefit.2
- It is important to note that the findings of this study are preliminary, meaning further research must be conducted in order to verify these findings.2
