Research Notes on First Signs of Diabetes

The first signs of diabetes generally go undiagnosed and individuals may have diabetes for up to five years before showing any symptoms.1 Excessive thirst, increased urination, fatigue, weight loss, blurred vision, slow-healing sores, frequent infections, tingling hands and feet, and inflammation of the gums are early signs associated with diabetes type 1 and type 2.2 While there is no cure for diabetes, early management of the disease can minimize severe complications.3

Fast Facts:

  • Only 50 percent of patients with diabetes have been diagnosed.1 American Diabetes Association reported that more than 6 million people don't recognize diabetes symptoms.4
  • Proper management of diabetes includes diet, exercise, and proper medication.3
  • An estimated 17 million people in the United States have diabetes. Approximately 1 million more are diagnosed each year.5
  • Diabetes is the 6th deadliest disease in the country claiming more than 400,000 lives in the United States per year.5
