Research Notes on First Signs of Autism

The first signs of autism can be easily missed. Instead of abnormal behaviors, many of the early signs of autism involve the absence of normal ones. In an infant, possible signs of autism may include the lack of certain behaviors such as making eye contact, babbling or making other noises, smiling when smiled at, and pointing or waving good-bye.1 Other possible first signs of autism in children include impaired ability to start or sustain a conversation, problems making friends with peers, lack of or impairment of imaginative and social play, repetitive or unusual use of language, inflexible adherence to specific routines or rituals, and preoccupation with certain objects or subjects.2

Fast Facts:

  • About 25% of children with autism appeared to have normal development as an infant and then regressed between the age of twelve and twenty-four months.1
  • According to a study published in the April 2007 issue of Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, one of the earliest signs of autism may be the failure to respond to hearing one's name.1
  • The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that all children receive screenings for autism at nine, eighteen, and thirty months of age.1
