Research Notes on First Signs of Antidepressant Withdrawal

Many of the side effects that are typical with antidepressants are not experienced until patients try to discontinue usage.1 Early symptoms of antidepressant withdrawal include flu-like symptoms, insomnia, imbalance, sensory disturbances, and hyperarousal.2 Antidepressant withdrawal is also called discontinuation syndrome.2 Failure to recognize antidepressant discontinuation syndrome may result in misdiagnosis and potentially exposing patients to unnecessary risky medical interventions.3

Fast Facts:

  • The onset of symptoms occurs shortly after stopping the drug or reducing the antidepressant dose.4
  • Typical symptoms of antidepressant withdrawal include fatigue, nausea, myalgia, insomnia, anxiety, agitation, dizziness, hallucinations, blurred vision, irritability, tingling sensations, vivid dreams, sweating, or electric shock sensations.2
  • Symptoms typically last for one to two weeks.
  • Symptoms leave once use of the antidepressant has resumed.
  • Patients should never stop using taking their antidepressant medications without permission from a physician that prescribed the medication.
