Research Notes on First Signs of Alcoholism


The first signs of alcoholism include drinking as a way to self-medicate, increased tolerance for alcohol, not being able to remember events or blocks of time while drinking, hiding drinking from others, planning activities around drinking, and increasingly thinking about alcohol more. Alcoholism can occur in people of any age.1 Alcoholics may drink alone, lose interest in activities, and begin keeping alcohol in unexpected places.2
