Finger joint replacement - also known as finger arthoplasty - is a surgical procedure to replace joint surfaces when conventional treatments fail.1 This type of surgery is performed to replace damaged joint surfaces causing pain and stiffness from arthritis.2 Bone shaping, implant insertion, and rebalancing of surrounding joint tissues are the procedures for small joint implant surgery.3

  • As with all surgeries, possible complications include: problems with anesthesia, infection, nerve damage, and prosthesis failure.1
  • Over 500,000 implants have replaced damaged finger, wrist, and toe joints since 1969.3
  • Alfred B. Swanson developed the small joint implant in 1962.3
  • The first patient using a silicone implant occurred in 1964.3
  • The finger implant was approved and officially became available in 1969.3
