Research Notes on Fine Motor Development


Fine motor development is the development of the small muscle groups. This includes skills such as grasping a pencil, using the finger and thumb to pick up a raisin, completing a puzzle, etc. Children between the ages of 2 and 3 are able to put on and take off simplistic articles of clothing. By age 4 and 5 most can cut with scissors and manipulate a fork. By age 6, most children are able to cut softer foods with a knife and tie his or her own shoes.
