Research Notes on Finasteride
Finasteride, sold under the brand name Propecia, is sometimes recommended in the treatment of male pattern baldness. Finasteride increases hair growth, improves hair regrowth, and slows down hair loss as long as the medication is taken. It works only on scalp hair and does not affect hair on other parts of the body.1
Fast Facts:
- In general, it takes approximately three months or more for most men to notice an improvement when using finasteride for alopecia.2
- Commonly reported side effects of finasteride include: dizziness, impotence, headache, and skin rash.2
- Finasteride is also sometimes used to treat enlarged prostate.2
- Women and children should not handle or use finasteride.2
