Research Notes on Fibromyalgia Symptoms

Fibromyalgia symptoms may include chronic muscle pain, muscle spasms, stiffness, decreased energy, fatigue and sleep disturbances. Other possible symptoms may include headaches, depression, anxiety, numbness, tingling, dizziness, and abdominal problems such as bloating, nausea, constipation and diarrhea. The pain connected with fibromyalgia is often described as a constant, dull ache arising from the muscles.1 Fibromyalgia is characterized by additional pain when pressure is applied to tender points in the body. Locations of these "trigger points" may include the back of the head, between the shoulder blades, the top of the shoulders, the front sides of neck, the upper chest, the outer elbows, the upper hips, the sides of the hips, and the inner knees.2

Fast Facts:

  • Symptoms may continue indefinitely or disappear and reoccur months later if fibromyalgia is not diagnosed and treated early.1
  • Fibromyalgia symptoms may vary depending on the time of day.1
  • Weather, stress, and physical activity may affect severity of symptoms.2
