Research Notes on Fetal Alcohol Syndrome
Fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) is a completely preventable birth defect. Since no research has shown how much alcohol might be safe for one woman vs. another, the only way to be sure not to hurt your baby is to avoid alcohol entirely while pregnant.
Fast Facts:
- The main effect of FAS is permanent central nervous system damage, especially the brain.
- Fetal alcohol exposure is the leading known cause of mental retardation in the Western World.
- In the United States the FAS prevalence rate is estimated to be between 0.2 and 2.0 cases per 1,000 live births.
