Research Notes on Ferrous Sulfate

Ferrous sulfate (also known as iron (II) sulfate/sulphate or copperas) is used to treat or prevent anemia.1 Common side effects of ferrous sulfate treatment include constipation and stomach upset. The liquid may stain your teeth, and your stools will become dark.2 Iron overdose can be fatal, especially in children under the age of six.3

Fast Facts:

  • Coffee, tea, eggs, and milk may prevent the full absorption of iron; however, vitamin C helps the body to absorb it.4
  • To prevent staining of the teeth, mix liquid ferrous sulfate in water or fruit juice and drink through a straw.5
  • Sometimes sold in combination with other vitamins and minerals.
