Research Notes on Female Circumcision Consequences
Female circumcision or female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM/C) refers to the total removal of the external female genitalia or other injury to the female genital organs whether for cultural, religious or other non-therapeutic reasons. The procedure is traditionally carried out by an older woman with no medical training. According to statistics, there are 138 million African women have undergone FGM worldwide and each year, it is estimated that additional 2 million girls are at risk of the practice.
