Research Notes on Febrile Seizure Treatment
A febrile seizure is a convulsion triggered by a rise in body temperature. During an attack, place the child in the recovery position. Lay them on their side, on a soft surface, with their face turned to one side. This will keep their airway open, and prevent choking.1 Seek medical attention if the seizure lasts more than a few minutes.2
Fast Facts:
- Anti-fever medication such as acetaminophen may help lower the fever.3
- You should not give water or put something in the child's mouth, as this increases the risk of injury.1
- Prolonged daily use of oral anticonvulsants is usually not recommended because of their potential for side effects.4
