Research Notes on Feather Allergy


Allergy is a disorder of the immune system also referred to as atopy. Allergic reactions occur due to environmental substances known as allergens.1 Feather allergy are reactions to feather dander or feather dust. Symptoms include allergic rhinitis, coughing and breathing difficulties. The most effective treatment for this type of allergy is to limit or eliminate exposure to birds and the allergens they carry.2

  • Feathers carry dust mites and mold, which cause allergic responses.3
  • Feather allergens are airborne.4
  • Down pillows can also cause feather allergies.4
