Breast cancer is the second leading cause of death in women. They have a one in eight chance of developing breast cancer in their lifetime.1Famous people are no exception to this statistic, but they do help the cause by raising awareness of the disease.
Fast Facts:
- The Pink Bracelet Fund was started in 2004 by fans of Melissa Etheridge, who was diagnosed with breast cancer that year.2
- 40% of participants in a survey conducted by the National Cancer Institute saw or heard celebrities encouraging them to be screened for breast cancer and that influenced them to go for a mammogram.3
- Jaclyn Smith, who was diagnoses with breast cancer in 2002, is the spokesperson for the Strength in Knowing: The Facts and Fiction of Breast Cancer Risk program.4
