Research Notes on Family Therapy
Family therapy has been proven to be effective in helping families to work better together and improving strained relationships.1 This form of psychotherapy allows for the participation of all family members in sessions with a psychiatrist or family therapist.2 A therapist will be able to assess the interactions of family members with each other objectively and help them to resolve issues.3 Family therapy is considered to be short-term and often only lasts up to five months.1
Fast Facts:
- Family therapy can be effective in cases of substance abuse, trauma, and divorce.1
- Therapy is not considered suitable for families where a parent has been diagnosed as having an antisocial or paranoid personality disorder.2
- Family therapy can result in improved communications among family members.2
- It is especially effective in helping blended families with adjustment problems.2
