Research Notes on Fallopian Tubes
The fallopian tube (also called an oviduct) comes in pairs in female mammals. These tubes lead from the ovaries to the upper part of the uterus and are about 2 cm (about 0.75 in) thick and 10 to 13 cm (4 to 5 in) long.1 Tubal ligation is a permanent method of birth control which involves blocking or cutting the fallopian tubes.2 The main purpose of the fallopian tube is to transport eggs to the uterus and provide a conduit for sperm to fertilize the egg.3
Fast Facts:
- Many cases of infertility are a result of blocked fallopian tubes due to scar tissue from pelvic infections.1
- Endometriosis can invade the fallopian tubes.4
- Unusual vaginal discharge, nausea, fever and pelvic pain are all potential indications that there is a problem with the fallopian tubes.5
