Sleep Disorders 101: Mattress Quality and Sleep

Is a high-end mattress worth it?

Answered by:

Michael Breus, Ph.D.

Clinical Psychologist and Author of Beauty Sleep

A lot of specialty mattresses have hit the market in recent years -- some of them touted by Hollywood celebrities. You don't always get what you pay for in the mattress department, however. In polls conducted on people who've purchased some of the priciest mattresses around, responses ran the gamut from yea to nay. This points to the subjectivity of mattress buying and the need to spend more time testing them out in stores than reading Consumer Reports and going on the advice of others. You wouldn't buy a car without test-driving it, and you shouldn't buy a mattress without taking the same precautions.
