Sleep Disorders 101: Catching Up on Sleep

Is it okay to let my body sleep as much as it wants during a vacation? Or will that work against me?

Answered by:

Michael Breus, Ph.D.

Clinical Psychologist and Author of Beauty Sleep

If you're terribly sleep deprived, then use your vacation as an opportunity to pay back your sleep debt. Get all the sleep you need. However, if you dramatically change your sleep schedule while on vacation, you'll experience sleep deprivation for the first few days back at home due to your new sleep patterns. This is a big reason why so many of us need a vacation from our vacation. The key factor here is to try and continue to maintain your wake time.
