Diabetes 101: Treatment Progress

What is some of the most exciting progress that's been made in research, treatment, and devices in recent years?

Answered by:

Sue McLaughlin, R.D., C.D.E.

President, Health Care & Education, American Diabetes Association

What's exciting is that we continue to have more research that helps us determine, with increasing finesse and specificity, what combination of treatments will be best for an individual. Although the overarching components of treatment are recommended for all people with diabetes, there is much variability between one individual and the next. Continued improvements in insulin delivery systems, such as insulin pens, and pumps, as well as continuous glucose sensing devices, are some of the newer improvements that enable people to manage their diabetes well.

Sue McLaughlin, R.D., C.D.E. is the President of Health Care & Education for the American Diabetes Association. She is also a registered dietitian and certified diabetes educator at The Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska, where she works with adult and pediatric endocrine patients. In addition, she is an educator and lifestyle coach for the Ho-Chunk Hope Special Diabetes Program for Indians (SDPI) diabetes prevention program demonstration project with the Winnebago, Nebraska Tribe.
