Diabetes 101: Future Breakthroughs

What are the big breakthroughs that lie ahead in diabetes treatment?

Answered by:

Sue McLaughlin, R.D., C.D.E.

President, Health Care & Education, American Diabetes Association

That is the million dollar question. We are all hoping for the ‘closed loop’ system or artificial pancreas which works just like the pancreas does when it is working correctly (i.e. as the blood sugar rises (as after a meal), a sensing device measures blood sugar in terms of when and how much it raises blood sugar, and an insulin delivery system administers insulin to the body in exactly the right amount, to results in blood sugars that are in the normal range.

Until then, advances in technology will enable the equipment that is used for testing blood glucose, sensing blood glucose and delivering insulin, to be more appropriate and accurate.

In spite of all these advances which make living with diabetes a bit more manageable and tolerable, the day to day routine of diabetes can be overwhelming. We still have a long way to go in our understanding of how to help people living with this condition better manage the disease while maintaining their quality of life. Education and ongoing support and encouragement are keys to success.
