Research Notes on Eye Exams

During a complete eye exam, your eye doctor will not only determine your prescription for eyeglasses or contact lenses, but will also check your eyes for common eye problems such as refractive errors, amblyopia, and strabismus, and eye diseases such as glaucoma and diabetic eye disease. Common tests performed during an eye exam include an eye muscle test, visual acuity test, refraction assessment, visual field test, slit-lamp examination, retinal examination, and glaucoma test.

Fast Facts:

  • Vision screenings that are performed by a school nurse or your employer are not the same as comprehensive eye exams.
  • You may need to see your eye doctor more frequently than recommended if you have a family history of eye problems, are an African American over age 40, have diabetes or have a history of eye injury.
  • Additional testing may be needed based on the results of the previous tests to confirm or rule out possible problems, to clarify uncertain findings, or to provide a more in-depth assessment.
