Research Notes on Eye Angiogram

A dye called fluorescein is injected into a vein and highlights the blood vessels of the eye. This allows the doctor to see any circulation problems, swelling, or leaking of the blood vessel, enabling the doctor to make a diagnosis. If the test is done with a digital camera system the doctor can read the results on the spot.1 When the dye leaves the body via the urine it will have a yellow-green appearance. This occurs within 12 - 24 hours.2

Fast Facts:

  • The test is often performed to diagnose diabetic retinopathy and macular degeneration3
  • There are no specific risks associated with an eye angiogram.4
  • The retina of the eye receives the images we see, so an eye angiogram is a very important diagnostic tool, especially for diabetics and the elderly.
