External hemorrhoids is a condition where the veins around the rectum and anus are swollen and inflamed.1 A thrombosed external hemorrhoid can form when blood pools - forming a clot (thrombus) in the hemorrhoid. The increased strain in abdominal pressure is the trigger for hemorrhoids.2

  • Common causes: Obesity, pregnancy, standing or sitting for long periods of time, liver disease, constipation and low fiber diet.3

  • Diagnosed by visual or rectal examination.2
