Research Notes on Exocrine Tumors
The pancreas is a digestive organ that secretes both hormones -- the endocrine pancreas -- and digestive enzymes -- the exocrine pancreas. Tumors grow in the ducts that drain into the duodenum. Almost all pancreatic cancers originate in the lining of the exocrine ducts.
Fast Facts:
- 80% to 90% of all pancreatic tumors are in the exocrine tissues of the pancreas.1
- Some early symptoms are loss of weight, loss of appetite and nausea. The most common sign is jaundice.2
- Exocrine tumors -- pancreatic cancer -- are hard to diagnose because the symptoms indicate so many other possible causes.3
- Prognosis is generally poor because there just are not many symptoms in the early stages. 6% of all cancers are of the pancreas.4
