Research Notes on Exhibitionism

Exhibitionism is the psychological need and pattern of behavior involving exposing parts of the body to another person to attract their attention. Exhibitionism is classified into several groups including flashing, mooning (displaying one's bare buttocks), anasyrma (lifting of one's skirt to reveal bare genitals), and martymachlia (a paraphillia of sexually enjoying having others watch exhibitionist behavior).1 As a whole, exhibitionism is classified as a mental disorder.2

Fast Facts:

  • Theories abound as to the origins of exhibitionism, such as a childhood history of ADHD, traumatic brain injury, and emotional abuse in childhood.2
  • Key features of true exhibitionism include sexual arousal related to the shock, the victim is unwilling, and no further sexual contact is desired.3
  • The exhibitionist behavior frequently occurs around times of stress.3
