An excisional biopsy is the most involved type of biopsy checking for cancer. The entire suspicious lesion or lump of tissue is removed. This procedure is common for suspected cancers such as skin cancer, breast cancer, or thyroid cancer as it has the most accurate results and removing the entire lesion can sometimes alleviate the need for further surgery.
