Research Notes on Euphoria
Euphoria is defined as a feeling of well being, or a pleasurable state that may be induced by a drug or other substance.1 Medically, euphoria is recognized as an emotion, but it's technically an effect. It is considered to be an exaggerated state which is not commonly achieved through normal human experience.2 Those who suffer from bipolar disorder may experience euphoria during a manic episode due to exaggerated changes in brain chemistry. This is considered to be an abnormal state and not connected to anything happening in the person's life.3
Fast Facts:
- An orgasm can produce a brief state of euphoria.2
- Cocaine, heroin, opiates, nitrous oxide, and amphetamine use may induce a mildly intense euphoric experience.2
- Mania, hyperactivity and recklessness are related to euphoria.4
