Research Notes on Estrogen with Ischemic Heart Disease
Estrogen has a complex roll in ischemic heart disease. Scientists are still learning about what estrogen does to the body. The big question is whether to use estrogen after menopause or not.The American Heart Association does not advise women to take estrogen or selective estrogen receptor modulators to reduce the risk of coronary heart disease or stroke.1
Fast Facts:
- The rate of coronary artery disease increases two to three times after menopause.2
- If you are 10 or more years past menopause, taking estrogen could raise your risk of ishemic heart disease.
- Talk to your doctor about the risks with taking estrogen.
