Research Notes on Upper Endoscopy
An upper endoscopy -- also called an esophagogastroduodenoscopy or EGD -- is a diagnostic endoscopic procedure of the upper part of the gastrointestinal tract up to the duodenum. It is considered a minimally invasive procedure; it does not require an incision into one of the major body cavities, nor does it require any significant recovery after the procedure. Recovery will take longer if sedation or anaesthesia has been used.1
Fast Facts:
- It is more accurate in detecting inflammations, ulcers, or tumors than x-rays.2
- The upper intestinal tract must be emptied before the procedure.2
- It also used to perform biopsies.3
- A sore throat is a common after-effect.1
