Research Notes on Erosive Osteoarthritis
Erosive osteoarthritis, also called inflammatory osteoarthritis, is a form of osteoarthritis that is characterized by erosions to the joints of the hands. Erosive osteoarthritis may also occur in other joints of the body, though the condition is defined by its effects of the hands.1 The joints typically affected by erosive osteoarthritis are the distal interphalangeal joints (the joints closest to the fingertips), the proximal interphalangeal joints (the joints closest to the knuckles), and the first carpometacarpal joints (the joints closest to the base of the thumbs).2
Fast Facts:
- The initial symptoms of erosive osteoarthritis may be confused with rheumatoid arthritis or psoriatic arthritis.1
- Erosive osteoarthritis is most common in middle-aged or post-menopausal women. The ratio of this condion in women and men is twelve to one.1
- Symptoms of erosive osteoarthritis can appear suddenly and include pain, tenderness, and swelling.1
