Research Notes on Epilepsy and Stress
According to research, stress can cause changes in the brain which affect how the nerve cells work with each other, especially those around any damaged areas of the brain. This can increase the risk of seizures occurring. Some people can become afraid of their seizures and this can cause stress. In some cases this can become a vicious circle, with the fear causing seizures and seizures causing fear. 1
Fast Facts:
- Stress can cause hormonal changes such as an increase in the steroid hormone cortisol, which also may influence seizure activity.2
- Stress can be caused by overwork, inactivity, trying to achieve perfection, dissatisfaction with others, worry, fear, anger, not enough sleep, eating too much of the wrong foods, not eating enough, pressure for time or money, tense situations in family or work.3
- The best way to decrease your seizure frequency is to follow your medication schedule very closely.4
