Research Notes on Epilepsy Triggers
Seizures are rarely predictable and the factors that trigger a seizure are complex. The most common trigger of seizures is missed medication. Other factors that may trigger a seizure are hormonal fluctuations, disrupted sleep cycles, illness or fever, excessive use or withdrawal from alcohol to name a few.1
Fast Facts:
- Studies indicate that emotional stress, anxiety or anger may trigger seizures.1
- Seizures may be provoked by external stimulus (flashing lights) in condition known as reflex epilepsy.1
- Auditory stimuli are less common triggers of seizures.1
