Research Notes on Epilepsy Drug and Autism Risk
New research shows that women who are pregnant and taking drugs to treat epilepsy, may increase their child's chance of developing autism. Scientists urge than women should not discontinue taking their medications because this study is only in its preliminary stage. Over 600 children were involved in this study. Half of the children had a mother with epilepsy.1
Fast Facts:
- Mothers who took valproate alone for epilepsy were 7 times more likely to have autistic children.2
- Of the 632 children involved in the study, 9 have been diagnosed with autism and 1 shows autistic symptoms.2
- This study is published in the journal Neurology.3
