Research Notes on Endomyocardial Fibrosis
Endomyocardial fibrosis is a form of hypereosinophilic syndrome involving the heart.1 Endomyocardial fibrosis (EMF or Davies disease) is a rare disorder found in the tropical and subtropical regions of the world that is characterized by the development of restrictive cardiomyopathy. Endocardial fibrosis principally involves the inflow tracts of the right and left ventricles and may affect the atrioventricular valves, leading to tricuspid and mitral regurgitation.2
Fast Facts:
- EMF occurs primarily in areas of Africa, India and South America that are within 15° of the equator.2
- Women of reproductive age, children and young adults are more commonly affected than men.2
- Corticosteroids such as prednisone are good for reducing eosinophil levels and antineoplastics are useful for slowing eosinophil production.2
- EMF was first recognized in Uganda during the 1940's and 20 percent of cardiac cases in that country are sent for echocardiography.3
