Research Notes on Enbrel and Heart Attacks
Heart attack is a very rare side effect of Enbrel as reported by clinical studies. However, it is difficult to determine if Enbrel caused the heart attacks, or if the patients already had a preexisting heart condition prior to taking the drug.1 Other rare side effects associated with Enbrel that may affect the heart include rapid heart beat, chest congestion and shortness of breath.2 If you have a history of heart disease or congestive heart failure, consult a doctor before using Enbrel.3
Fast Facts:
- Etanercept is the generic drug name for Enbrel.4
- Enbrel is taken as an injection underneath the skin within the subcutaneous tissue, also known as a subcutaneous injection.2
- Enbrel is a TNF blocker; it blocks a protein that is an underlying cause of inflammation related to autoimmune diorders.5
