Research Notes on Emollients for Psoriasis
Emollients are often the first form of therapy in treating psoriasis.1 Keeping the skin moist helps to reduce redness and itching of psoriasis lesions.2 Some dermatologists suggest that the greasiest emollients (such as petrolatum) are more beneficial to psoriatic skin.2
Fast Facts:
- Emollients can be used as a soap substitute during bathing or washing when you experience a psoriasis flare-up.3
- Emollients should be applied before other topical treatments. Allow about 30 minutes between the application of emollients and the application of topical psoriasis medications.3
- Unless your physician tells you otherwise, emollients can be used as often as needed to keep your skin soft and scale-free.3
