Research Notes on Emollients
Emollients are products used to soften the skin.1 Most emollients are considered moisturizers, as they act in a way that allows skin to absorb more water while decreasing the water that is exuded through the skin.2 Emollients are often used to treat and prevent dry, itchy skin conditions (such as psoriasis or eczema) or skin rashes that may be a result of skin irritation.3
Fast Facts:
- Vitamin A, vitamin C, and vitamin E are commonly found in many emollients.1
- Emollients carry the risk of very few side effects. Occasionally, redness or itching may occur at the site of application. In the event you experience a side effect, discontinue use and contact your physician.3
- Emollients are available in various forms, such as oils, creams, gels, lotions, or sprays. Some emollients may be scented.3
