Research Notes on Embolism
An embolism happens when a mass moves from one part of the body, and causes a blockage in a blood vessel in another part of the body.1 These masses could be, for example, a blood clot or air bubble.2 The type of embolism is classified by the type of material causing the blockage.1 A pulmonary embolism is the blockage of an artery in the lungs.3
Fast Facts:
- Embolisms may also be caused by fat droplets, pus, small pieces of tissue, foreign materials or amniotic fluid.1
- Whatever the mass, it has 3 possible pathways: anterograde, retrograde, and paradoxical.1
- An embolism can result in symptoms ranging from none to life threatening, depending on the size of the emboli and the vein blocked.2
- A minimum of 100,000 cases of pulmonary embolism occur in the U.S. each year.3
