Research Notes on Eligard
Eligard, also known by leuprolide is a man made gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH) which is similar to a natural hormone in the body.1 It is used to reduce the amount of testosterone in a male and estrogen in a female. The prescription is available in intramuscular injection, subcutaneous injection, depot injection (at doctor's office) and implant.2

- FDA Pregnancy Category X.2
- Treatment uses: symptoms of advanced prostate cancer, endometriosis, uterine fibroids and central precocious puberty.3
- Under investigation for use with autism and Alzheimer's disease.4
- Common side effects: injection site reaction, breast swelling or tenderness, decrease in sexual libido, diarrhea, hot flashes, loss of appetite and nausea.1
