Research Notes on Electrolytes
Electrolytes are minerals in your blood, urine and body fluids. Maintaining the right balance of sodium, calcium, potassium, chlorine, phosphate and magnesium helps your body's blood chemistry, muscle action and other processes.1 The levels of electrolytes in your body can become too low or too high causing a disorder.1 Causes of an electrolyte disorder include some medicines, vomiting, diarrhea, sweating or kidney problems.1
Fast Facts:
- Electrolytes lost through vomiting, diarrhea, or sweating can be replenished by drinks containing sodium and potassium salts. 2
- An imbalance of electrolytes can occur when a person becomes dehydrated; uses certain drugs; has certain disorders of the heart, kidney, or liver; or is given intravenous fluids or feedings in inappropriate amounts. 3
- Doctors measure the levels of minerals in the body by a blood test (called an electrolyte panel) or urinalysis to detect an electrolyte imbalance.4
