Research Notes on Electroconvulsive Therapy During Pregnancy
Electroconvulsive therapy during pregnancy is a safe alternative for treating depression, mania, catatonia, or schizophrenia without the use of medications which could be harmful to the fetus.1 Studies have found that the overall risk electroconvulsive therapy poses to the fetus is relatively small. However, many health care providers and patients are reluctant to try this treatment method during pregnancy.2
