Research Notes on Male Ejaculation

Ejaculation is generally the result of sexual stimulation. Onset occurs approximately twelve months from the start of puberty.1 It is controlled by the central nervous system through two phases - emission and ejaculation proper. Emission is controlled by the sympathetic nervous system and ejaculation proper is controlled by spinal reflex at level S2-S4.2

Fast Facts:

  • First phase takes place in the vas deferens which is the "unstoppable" phase where the sperm is stored and transported.2
  • Second phase involves the muscles at the base of the penis; they contract every 0.8 seconds and force semen out of the penis (up to five spurts).2
  • Disorders include retrograde ejaculation, premature ejaculation and retarded orgasm (delayed ejaculation).3
  • Ejaculation produces approximately one teaspoon of sperm.4
  • The ejaculation refractory period is approximately 15 to 20 minutes.1
