Effexor is a brand name for the drug venlafaxine. It is used in the treatment of major depressive disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, anxiety disorder, and panic disorder.1 Effexor helps to restore the balance of natural substances in the brain.2 People under the age of 24 years old may experience thoughts of suicide when first taking this medication.2 It is important to be evaluated by a medical professional for at least the first 12 weeks of treatment.2 For complete information, see the venlafaxine WisdomCard.
Fast Facts:
- Side effects include blurred vision, constipation, dizziness, and impotence.3
- Should never be taken in combination with MAOIs.3
- Usually prescribed to be taken 2-3 times daily.
- More serious side effects such as feelings of irritability, hostility, and impulsiveness should be reported to a physician immediately.3
