Research Notes on Dysthymia and Alcoholism
Dysthymia and alcoholism are often linked together in individuals. According to HealthScout, about fifty percent of people with dysthymia also suffer from an alcohol problem.1 This is partly due to the fact that dysthymia is a long-lasting disorder.2
Fast Facts:
- Left untreated, dysthymia can turn into major depression.2
- Psychotherapy and/or antidepressants are used to treat dysthymia.2
- An alcoholic cannot be diagnosed with dysthymia if their symptoms are better explained by the alcoholism.3
- If you think you're drinking too much, simple questionnaires can help you understand how serious your problem might be. Try OrganizedWisdom's alcoholism test
