Research Notes on Dysbetalipoproteinemia Treatment
Treating the underlying cause is the first approach in the treatment of dysbetalipoproteinemia. Other treatment options include diet, exercise, medication, and surgery. Improper glucose management, hypothyroidism, and obesity are contributing causes to this rare disorder. This condition is genetic and a major risk factor for coronary heart disease.1
Fast Facts:
- Dysbetalipoproteinemia is also known as hyperlipoproteinemia type III and broad beta disease.2
- Statins are generally not effective to treat this condition. Fibrates and fish oil are recommended medicinal treatment options.2
- Dysbetalipoproteinemia is characterized by the inability of the body to metabolize lipids, primarily very low density lipoprotein (VLDL).3
