Research Notes on Drugs that Treat Depression
There are a variety of medications that are available to treat depression. Before prescribing an antidepressant, your doctor may have you take a series of tests to decide which would be the safest and most effective medication.1 Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors are usually the first medications prescribed due to the success rate associated with them.2 Your doctor may also prescribe a mood stabilizer or antipsychotic medication if necessary.1
Fast Facts:
- Monoamine oxidase inhibitors are usually prescribed as a last resort due to their potentially serious side effects.2
- Medications should be taken as prescribed to reduce the risk of side effects.3
- Some depression medications have been known to cause an increase in suicidal thoughts in some people.1
- It may take up to 12 weeks for the full benefits of the drugs to be experienced.1
